Why do we need to make fake blood?
Fake blood allows us to create gory horror scenes and the illusion of realistic blood.
We need fake blood in any horror we make - this is to make it look as realistic as possible. If you stab someone and don't have any blood it isn't going to make a good horror movie as there would be no realistic element.
Blood is used in horror to make it gory and gruesome; it is mainly used when people are stabbed and/or cough up blood etc.. it makes the film more effective and adds depth to the scenes that are filmed. The key to a successful horror film is often in the detail of the blood. If the blood looks realistic then this will engage the audience and possibly make it look realistic. However, if the blood looks tacky and fake then it will ruin the whole atmosphere of the film that the production company has worked so hard to achieve.
When we made blood, we had to test 3 things: taste, texture and colour.

There are four different ways to make fake blood:
- Icing sugar blood
- Chocolate blood
- Gravy blood
- Washing up liquid blood
Icing Sugar Blood
The icing sugar blood is edible and was very easy to make. With the blood being edible, it meant that actors could retain the liquid within their mouth and not have to worry about the consequences of swallowing the substance. This is the type of fake blood that our group decided to make.
Texture: the consistency was smooth but with a slimy feel to it.
Taste: Very sour, you could taste the food colouring more than you could taste the icing sugar, which made it quite unpleasant.

Texture: the consistency was smooth but with a slimy feel to it.
Taste: Very sour, you could taste the food colouring more than you could taste the icing sugar, which made it quite unpleasant.
INGREDIENTS:
- Icing Sugar
- Food colouring (red)
- Water (if wanted a runnier consistency)
THE MAKING-
- Add a small amount of icing sugar to a bowl.
- Then add the red food colouring until the desired colour and consistency has been reached.
- If you find the texture too thick, add some water.
Chocolate Blood
Chocolate blood is edible and also simple to create. Due to the fact this blood is edible, it means actors can put it in their mouths and spit it out again without any worry and also it tastes nicer than the other types of blood. This fake blood was made by the group Slasher Productions. Click here if you would like to see their video and page on how they made it.

THE MAKING-
- Add water to the cocoa and blend together.
- Once blended add the rest of the ingredients and mix together.
- Allow the mixture to sit for awhile and skim the bubbles off on the top.
- If you're not satisfied with the colour outcome, add a few drops of yellow colouring.
Gravy Blood
Gravy blood is another edible blood, which is simple to create. Of course it tastes like gravy mixed with food colouring so it may not have the most pleasant taste but it means that the actors in the scene can put it in their mouths without the worry of swallowing it. This fake blood was made by two groups: Crimson Webb and Twisted Productions. Click here and here to see their videos and pages of how they made it.

Washing Up Liquid Blood
Washing up liquid blood is a non-edible blood, which should not be consumed. However, it is perfect for a blood bath scene. One thing you must remember is that it is a one take wonder, due to the fact it will go bubbly when left and mixed too long, also if you throw it around too much, it will bubble up as it is made with washing up liquid. This type of blood is absolutely perfect if you want a lot of blood fast, as it is easy and doesn't need a lot of ingredients to make.
