Lighting within media can help to create different atmospheres within a scene the audience are about to see and how the audience see certain characters during the film. Using either High-Key lighting or Low-Key lighting affects how the audience interpret what they see on screen and how the character come across. High-Key lighting can give a character power or provide the impression of a safe environment. Low-Key lighting can make a character seem vulnerable or provide the impression of a dangerous environment.
When filming we decided to shoot near enough all of our shots in a bright environment; this was so that our product produced would be sharper and not be pixilated. Later, in post-production, we were able to edit and manipulate the lightening levels in each shot to fit the atmosphere we wanted to create within our Opening Title Sequence.
Types of lighting used when filming:
1. Natural Lighting
We used natural lighting when it seemed appropriate and was bright enough to do so. Natural lighting was important when filming as it meant our scene were already enhanced without using the external lighting sources. This enabled us to use natural lighting for some of our shots - e.g when filming the garden scene and using the trampoline. WE chose to not use any external lighting outside when filming as it would cast unnecessary shadows across the scene which would take away from the innocence of play.
2.External Lighting
We used external lighting such as lamps, torches and main lights to enhance the quality of our shots. We chose to use a variety of lighting choices as each one was deemed appropriate for a particular scene. In the scene where you see the main characters face before she is forced backwards, the whole scene is shot using two phone camera torches for the lighting. We chose to use this as our only light source as it gave really effective shadowing over her face and added to the suspense build up of the scene.
In the scenes where the mother is dying/being murdered we chose to use a variety of lighting choices. We used natural light, main lights and available lamps. We chose this combination as it made the scen brighter to film. The brighter the seen is the clearer the image. In post production we used layering of effects and brightness to bring down the levels to make it seen more eery without loosing the quality of the shot.
